It’s Shakespeare’s Birthday!

Or at least traditionally considered so, though no one knows the exact date for sure (He was baptized April 26, 1564).

It’s also Talk Like Shakespeare Day (have at it, prithee, Fr. Z).

There one new book on Shakespeare I really want to read, Shakespeare on Love: Seeing the Catholic Presence in Romeo and Juliet, by Joseph Pearce. An anecdote to the truly horrible modern Oscar-winning movie with a very similar name, which you should miss as soon as possible, if you haven’t done so already.

A growing number of scholars are appreciating the fact that Shakespeare’s recusant Catholic family background strongly influenced his works, and Pearce is very insightful on this subject. I’m putting it on my reading list.
